The Assessment

What is Strength & Power Testing?

Strength and power testing is a structured physical assessment that measures your capacity to produce force, generate explosive output, and maintain mechanical performance under load. It goes beyond what a standard gym session reveals — providing objective, repeatable metrics that can be tracked over time and compared to sport-specific benchmarks.

The assessment examines multiple qualities: maximal strength (how much force you can produce), power (how quickly you produce it), and bilateral symmetry (how balanced your output is between limbs). The results are used to identify strengths, flag imbalances, and build a training picture that is grounded in data rather than perception.

The Process

What’s involved

01
Warm-Up & History
~10 min
A targeted warm-up prepares the neuromuscular system for maximal testing. Your training background, recent loading, and any relevant injury history are reviewed before testing begins.
02
Strength Assessment
~20 min
Lower-body and upper-body strength is assessed using validated testing protocols. Metrics include isometric and dynamic force production, with bilateral comparison to identify any asymmetries.
03
Power & Explosiveness Testing
~20 min
Jump tests and explosive movement protocols measure peak power output, rate of force development, and reactive strength — key indicators for sprint, agility, and contact sport performance.
04
Results & Report
~10 min
All metrics are benchmarked against age, sex, and sport-relevant norms. Your same-day report includes findings, benchmark comparisons, identified priorities, and recommended training directions.
Ideal For

Who it’s for

✓ Athletes in pre-season wanting a physical baseline
✓ Strength athletes tracking progress between training blocks
✓ Team-sport athletes assessing power and asymmetry
✓ Returning athletes post-injury clearance
✓ Youth athletes entering structured performance training
✓ Anyone wanting an objective measure of physical capacity

Validated Protocols
Force Measurement & Jump Analysis

Testing uses validated strength and jump protocols with force measurement to capture peak power, rate of force development, and bilateral asymmetry. Results are expressed in absolute and relative (per-kg) values, allowing meaningful comparison across athletes of different body sizes and against published sport-specific norms.

Common Questions

Strength & Power Testing FAQ

Do I need to be very strong or athletic to do this test?
No. The assessment is appropriate for a wide range of fitness levels. All results are benchmarked relative to your age, sex, and sport context — the goal is to understand where you sit today and identify what to prioritise, not to compare you against elite athletes.
How should I prepare?
Avoid heavy strength training in the 48 hours before your test. Arrive well-slept and adequately fuelled. Wear comfortable training attire and footwear suitable for lifting and jumping movements.
What does the asymmetry score mean?
Bilateral asymmetry compares the force output of your left and right limbs. A difference greater than 10–15% is considered clinically significant in most guidelines and may indicate a muscle imbalance, compensatory movement pattern, or residual effect of a previous injury.
Can I use this test to track progress over time?
Yes — repeat testing every 8–12 weeks is a practical way to monitor training adaptations. The same protocols are used each time, making the numbers directly comparable across sessions.
Is this test useful after an injury?
Strength and power testing is commonly used as part of a return-to-sport assessment following lower-limb injury. It provides objective data to support decision-making around training loads and progression. If you’re post-injury, your GP, physio, or specialist can refer you, or you can contact us directly to discuss your situation.
How much does strength and power testing cost in Brisbane?
Strength and power testing at GymTherapy starts from $197. That covers the full appointment — a clinician-led force plate assessment of your strength, power and left/right asymmetry, plus a results review benchmarking you against your age, sex and sport context. It's also available as part of our longevity and performance packages.
Where can I get strength and power testing in Brisbane?
You can book strength and power testing at GymTherapy's three Brisbane clinics — West End (Studio 99, 387 Montague Road), Newstead (Club Bunker, 27b Doggett Street) and Woolloongabba / East Brisbane (993 Stanley Street East). Open Mon–Fri 6am–8pm and Sat 6am–1pm — no referral required.
