The Assessment

What is Runner Efficiency Testing?

Combined Runner Performance & Efficiency Testing gives you data-driven, reliable insight into your running efficiency, mechanics, metabolism and performance. It combines the VO2 Master metabolic analyser with elite inertia measurement units (IMUs) and video analysis to capture your mechanics, metabolism, ventilatory thresholds, VO₂ Max and training zones.

Specific speeds and paces are assessed to understand how your physiology and mechanics change as you run — and to guide specific training interventions that help you achieve your next personal best. You leave with a clear picture of what's driving, and limiting, your running.

The Process

What’s involved

01
Pre-Assessment & History
~10 min
An in-depth discussion of your current and past running and training history, previous injuries or current niggles, and your goal paces and race times. This shapes the testing protocol and what we focus on in your results.
02
Running Gait Analysis
~30 min
Running gait analysis using elite inertia measurement units (IMUs) and video software to understand your mechanics at a range of paces. This informs specific strategies to improve running performance and efficiency and reduce injury risk.
03
VO₂ Max & Metabolic Testing
~20 min
VO₂ Max ramp testing using the VO2 Master metabolic analyser, with a protocol matched to your physiology and training history. This identifies your VO₂ Max, ventilatory thresholds (VT1 & VT2) and accurate, individualised training zones.
04
Results & Development Plan
~15 min
We discuss the key findings, the factors influencing your running performance and gait, and an action plan to address them. You receive a running gait analysis report and a VO₂ Max report,  Re-testing tracks your improvement over time.
Ideal For

Who it’s for

✓ Competitive runners chasing a PB at any distance
✓ Runners who have plateaued despite consistent training
✓ Athletes who’ve done VO₂ max testing and want the full picture
✓ Triathletes optimising their run leg efficiency
✓ Coaches building data-driven periodisation programs

The technology

Research-Grade
VO2 Master Metabolic Analysis + IMU Gait Technology

We combine the VO2 Master metabolic analyser with elite inertia measurement units (IMUs) and video analysis. Direct gas analysis captures your true VO₂ Max, ventilatory thresholds and training zones, while IMU and video data reveal the mechanical factors — cadence, ground contact time, symmetry and posture — shaping your efficiency. Together they give a far more complete picture than pace- or wearable-based estimates.

Common Questions

Runner Efficiency Testing FAQ

How is running economy different from VO₂ max?
VO₂ max measures your ceiling — the maximum oxygen your body can use. Running economy measures how efficiently you use oxygen at submaximal speeds. Elite marathon runners often have a moderate VO₂ max but exceptional running economy — it’s the combination of both that determines performance.
Do I need to have done VO₂ max testing first?
No — VO₂ Max ramp testing is included in this assessment, alongside your running gait analysis. If you'd also like blood lactate threshold data, our Combined Threshold + VO₂ Max test or Complete Endurance Package adds that for the most complete endurance profile.
How do I prepare for the test?
Arrive fresh — avoid hard training in the 48 hours before. The test involves running at submaximal efforts, so it’s not exhausting, but you want your mechanics to reflect your normal running patterns rather than a fatigued state. Bring your race-day running shoes.
Can I improve my running economy?
Yes. Running economy responds to targeted training: plyometrics and strength training, technique adjustments, and structured periodisation all have documented effects on economy scores. The report will identify which levers are most relevant for you based on your specific test findings.
Is this test suitable for beginner runners?
Runner efficiency testing is most informative for runners with at least 3–6 months of consistent training, as your economy improves rapidly in the early stages of running. If you’re newer to running, a gait analysis or VO₂ max test may be a more appropriate starting point. We’re happy to help you choose the right assessment.
How much does runner performance testing cost in Brisbane?
Runner performance and efficiency testing at GymTherapy is $299. The 90-minute session combines a VO2 Max ramp, running economy measurement and gait analysis, with a report covering your training zones and the specific levers to improve your running.
