The Service

What is Assisted Stretch Therapy?

Assisted stretch therapy is a clinician-led flexibility and mobility session in which your practitioner applies controlled, progressive stretching techniques to improve your range of motion. Unlike static self-stretching, assisted stretching uses proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and other manual techniques that engage the nervous system — producing greater and longer-lasting gains in flexibility than passive stretching alone.

Sessions are entirely tailored to you. Your practitioner identifies the areas of restriction most relevant to your training, sport, or daily activities and targets them systematically — working through a progression across sessions to build cumulative gains in mobility. It’s an efficient, effective complement to any training program, particularly for athletes who feel chronically tight despite regular training.

What to Expect

What’s involved

01
Intake & Priority Areas
~5 min
At your first session, your practitioner identifies your key areas of tightness and restriction through a brief movement assessment. Your training background, sport, and mobility goals shape the session focus.
02
Assisted Stretching
~20–50 min
Your practitioner works through targeted areas using PNF techniques, contract-relax methods, and manual overpressure. You participate actively — contracting and relaxing muscles on cue — which is what makes assisted stretching more effective than passive techniques.
03
Home Mobility Plan
~5 min
Between sessions, a short daily mobility routine is prescribed to reinforce the gains from assisted stretching. Consistency between sessions accelerates progress and prevents regression.
04
Progressive Sessions
Ongoing
Each subsequent session builds on the previous. As range improves, new restrictions are addressed and the program evolves. Most athletes notice meaningful cumulative gains within 4–6 sessions.

The technology

Clinician-Led
PNF Stretching + Manual Mobility Techniques

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching involves alternating contraction and relaxation of the target muscle under the guidance of your practitioner. This neurological reset allows the muscle to be stretched further and more effectively than passive or static techniques — with research showing significantly greater range-of-motion gains compared to static stretching alone.

Common Questions

Assisted Stretch FAQ

Is it painful?
Assisted stretching should feel like a firm, productive stretch — not pain. Your practitioner will communicate throughout the session and work within a range that is challenging but comfortable. PNF techniques involve brief muscle contractions followed by deeper stretch, which most people find highly effective and surprisingly comfortable.
How is this different from a massage?
Massage primarily targets muscle tissue tension through soft tissue techniques. Assisted stretch therapy targets joint range of motion and neural flexibility through active stretching methods. The two are complementary — but if your primary goal is improving flexibility and mobility, assisted stretching tends to produce more targeted and lasting results.
How many sessions do I need?
Most athletes notice meaningful improvement within 2–4 sessions for targeted areas. Cumulative gains continue to build with regular sessions. Some athletes use assisted stretching as an ongoing maintenance tool — weekly or fortnightly — while others use it in blocks to address a specific restriction before retesting.
Should I have a movement assessment first?
A prior movement and mobility assessment is useful but not required. If you’ve completed the Movement & Mobility Testing assessment, your practitioner will use those findings to guide the session focus. If not, a brief movement screen at the start of your first session will identify the priority areas.
Can I book this as a regular weekly session?
Yes — many clients book weekly or fortnightly assisted stretch sessions as an ongoing part of their recovery and performance routine. Session packages are available at a reduced rate for regular bookings. Ask us about package options when you book.
How much does assisted stretch therapy cost in Brisbane?
Assisted stretch therapy at GymTherapy starts from $100 per session. Each session is physio-led using active and PNF stretching techniques to improve flexibility, joint range of motion and recovery. Session packages are available at a reduced rate for regular weekly or fortnightly bookings.
